Covers can make printed page 1 appear at PDF page 3. Inspect the content at both boundaries, then verify that the saved copy contains the needed context.
The page number shown by a PDF viewer may differ from the number printed inside the document, so confirm page content instead of relying on numbers alone.

PDF positions 3–5 contain printed page numbers 1–3
A synthetic ten-page PDF includes a cover and contents. Extracting PDF positions 3–5 produces three pages whose printed numbers are 1–3. The image below renders the actual extracted file.
Range input uses positions in the PDF, not the numbers printed on the pages. Covers and contents can offset these. Check the selected content, then reopen the output and inspect its first and last page.

Viewer page numbers may not match printed page numbers
Covers, contents pages, and dividers may be unnumbered or use Roman numerals. If someone asks for printed pages 10 through 15, locate the heading and printed number before selecting PDF pages 10 through 15.
Choose the result shape based on how it will be used
Keep selected pages in one PDF when they must be read together. Exclude pages when only a known appendix must be removed. Separate files are useful when the recipient needs to classify each page individually.
Odd and even pages may not equal front and back sides
A cover sheet or a missing blank page can reverse the pattern. Inspect several pages at the beginning and end before applying an odd- or even-page rule to a duplex scan.
Excluding pages is not secure redaction
You can omit a whole page containing private data, but hiding a small area requires proper redaction. A black rectangle may leave the underlying text available for copying or recovery.
Check numbering, bookmarks, and links in the new document
A new PDF starts with its first included page, while printed numbers remain unchanged. Existing bookmarks, contents links, and internal references may no longer point to the expected location.
